About

Founder

Kenneth V. Cummins founded Capitol Inquiry in  July 1991 after a 19-year career as an award-winning investigative journalist and political columnist.  The firm is headquartered in Washington, D.C. but conducts investigations for clients locally, nationally, and internationally.  Capitol Inquiry has a representative in Panama to serve US clients with investigative needs in Mexico and Central and South America, and to provide services to clients in those regions who need to obtain information and evidence in this country and elsewhere around the globe. Our highly experienced Panama rep has driven every highway and back-road in  Central America.  The firm’s network of established, qualified investigators extends globally.

Ken Cummins created the “Loose Lips”  politics and humor column for The Washington City Paper, and has written for Washingtonian magazine, Playboy, The New Republic and Reader’s Digest, among other publications. His reporting career includes The Washington Post and the national bureau of the Chicago Tribune.  Ken opened and manned the first-ever Washington bureau for the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union, Florida’s oldest newspaper. During the 1980s, he wrote a series of  articles exposing cigarette additives and the practices of the tobacco industry.

Under Ken’s able leadership for nearly three decades, Capitol Inquiry, one of the Washington DC areas most prominent private investigation firms has developed a reputation for successfully handling difficult and complex investigations and for providing high-quality and cost-effective investigative solutions.  The firm specializes in investigations that require obtaining hard-to-get information and locating and interviewing reluctant or hostile witnesses. We diligently respect client budgets, concerns, and confidentiality.

EXPERIENCED

Capitol Inquiry’s national and international network includes former journalists, current and former law enforcement officials, the owners of established investigative firms, former military and intelligence officials, former government employees and highly-trained professionals with backgrounds in law, counter-intelligence, government, accounting and risk consulting. Our team has the tools, knowledge and the professional rigor to confront the toughest challenges confronting the client, and to address these concerns efficiently, effectively, and economically. The firm’s work product matches or surpasses that of the largest investigation firms, but at half the cost.

RECOGNIZED

We offer a cross-disciplinary approach with expertise in law enforcement, media, politics, regulation, national security, and global events. We serve private individuals and families, law firms, family foundations, financial institutions, real estate investors, businesses and non-profits, and private investors worldwide.

TRUSTED

We view our mission as fundamentally about developing trust. Our founder and our investigators approach every case as if it is our only one. We take on each client as if he or she is our only relationship. We take every client seriously, and take whatever time is needed with each to understand fully the situation and concerns, and to develop agreed-upon tasks for addressing those concerns.

Our Firm

Capitol Inquiry LLC provides premium research, due-diligence background reporting, surveillance, financial asset and title searches, litigation support and commercial intelligence. We work with your attorney – or directly with you – to solve your toughest challenges.

Internships

We are always seeking talented employees and subcontractors from all disciplines who want investigative experience. If you have exceptional research skills, an eye for detail and diverse experiences – and a natural drive to find the facts – then we want to know about you! Please email your resume and a writing sample to: interns@capinq.com or mail it to us!

Capitol Inquiry offers students who are enrolled in academic programs at accredited institutions the opportunity for year-round, paid, flexible-hour, for-credit internships. Interns learn how a private investigation business operates, get hands-on experience working with experienced investigators and develop good research skills.

While many of our interns are enrolled in criminal justice and forensic programs, this is not a requirement. All disciplines are welcomed. Our interns have gone on to careers in the federal government, accounting, and security. Recent interns have found full-time jobs with the US Department of Defense, the US Department of Justice, law firms, the US Department of Homeland Security and state law enforcement agencies. Others have returned to academia to pursue advanced degrees.
